Does Window Tint Actually Block UV?

The short answer

Yes. Every film we install blocks 99% of ultraviolet light, and that's as true of the lightest 70% ceramic as it is of 5% limo tint. UV rejection comes from the film's construction, not its darkness, so a near-clear film protects your skin and your interior exactly as well as a dark one. Darkness changes glare and visible light; the film grade changes heat. UV is the one number that doesn't move — which is why "I want UV protection but I don't want a dark car" has a straightforward answer.

One number that doesn't move#

Look down the spec table for any film we sell and the UV column reads 99% at every single shade. Infrared moves. Total solar energy moves. Glare moves. UV doesn't, because blocking it is a property of the polyester and the UV inhibitors built into the film, and those are there whether the film is dyed to 5% or left almost water-clear at 70%.

Your windshield is already handling it#

Every windshield made since the 1930s is laminated — two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer — and that interlayer is a very effective UV filter on its own. So the glass directly in front of you is mostly covered before any film goes on.

Your side windows are not. Side glass is tempered, not laminated, and it passes a meaningful share of UVA. That's the window your left arm and the left side of your face sit against for every mile you drive, and it's the one film actually changes.

What it does for the car#

UV is what breaks the chemical bonds in dyes and plastics — it's why a dashboard cracks, why leather goes pale and stiff, and why a dark interior fades unevenly along whichever side faces the driveway. Blocking it doesn't stop fading altogether, because heat and visible light contribute too, but it removes the most aggressive part of the equation.

If UV protection is what I want, which film should I buy?

Any of them, and then choose on heat. All three block 99% of UV. If the car parks outside, ceramic is worth the difference for what it does to infrared; if it lives in a garage and you want the look, carbon does the UV job identically.

Can I get UV protection without a dark car?

Yes, and it's a common request. SunTek Evolve at 70% looks close to bare glass, is legal on every window including the fronts, blocks 99% of UV and still rejects more heat than a 5% carbon. It's the answer for anyone who wants the protection and finds night driving harder than they used to.

Does factory privacy glass block UV?

Some, but far less than film. Privacy glass is tinted in the melt — the colour is in the glass — and it's designed to cut visible light for privacy, not to filter ultraviolet. Dark rear glass with no film on it is still passing UV onto your back seat.
